What is a root canal?
A root canal treatment is done when the inside of your tooth becomes infected.
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp. If bacteria get in (usually from deep decay, cracks, or trauma), it can cause pain, swelling, and infection.
A root canal simply means:
- removing the infected tissue
- cleaning out the inside of the tooth
- sealing it to stop the infection coming back
The goal is straightforward, save your natural tooth and get rid of the pain.
Signs you may need a root canal
Not every toothache means you need one, but there are a few common signs we look out for:
- Ongoing tooth pain that doesn’t go away
- Pain when chewing or biting
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
- A feeling of pressure in the tooth
- Swelling around the gums
- A pimple or bump on the gum near the tooth
- Darkening or discolouration of the tooth

What happens during treatment?

Here’s what you can expect:
1. Numbing the area
We make sure the tooth and surrounding area are properly numb before starting.
2. Cleaning out the infection
A small opening is made in the tooth so we can remove the infected tissue inside.
3. Shaping and disinfecting
The canals inside the tooth are cleaned and shaped to remove bacteria.
4. Sealing the tooth
The space is filled and sealed to prevent reinfection.
5. Final restoration
In many cases, the tooth is then protected with a filling or crown to restore strength.
Some treatments are done in one visit, others may take two, depending on the infection.
Does it hurt?
This is the big one everyone asks.
The short answer, no, not in the way people expect.
Most people are surprised that a root canal feels similar to getting a standard filling. The real discomfort usually comes from the infection beforehand, not the treatment itself.
Once the area is numb, you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Afterward, there can be some mild soreness for a few days, which settles with time.
